Another Plug.
So, my friend Veerapatra Jinanavin (a.k.a. Tun or keko) just finished his summer internship at Pixar Animation Studios, and updated his website with new reel. woohoo! I think his luxo's idea turned out to be really cool. It's very exciting to see my friends are animating those Pixar characters. though he has done internship and out of Pixar, but now he's heading toward to NYC. that's pretty cool, too. so go check his stuff.

wip.
Those are still WIP.
It's been a while since I've made this post, here's what I've got so far. Obviously I'm working slower than ever before because of my job. But it's been a lot of fun to think about all of obstacles that I'm having on those characters. I've plotted out some of rough sketches for about 15 seconds sequence for them. then I pre-rigged duck character and made him a move, just to see how he could be moving. Then, some issues on his legs has popped up. Because of design issue, he got such a short leg and it's been aligned in the center of the body, which is not right from anatomical standpoint. Maybe it looks okay on the picture, but those placement of the legs can give the audience some weirdness when he's on the move. So I have to either change his design or animate him like snappy way so that audience won't notice. I'm still thinking about this issue.
Katie, the girl character. I think she got some cuteness but it's not quite there yet. So I've gotta work on that, too.
Rigging part is not that hard for me since that's exactly what I'm doing everyday at work. I've got a lot of techniques like matrix calculations since I'm out of school. so my speed for working on rigging had been improved. But still, making something able to work for telling a story is not easy. It's not easy. I tend to complain on bad management of bad director. they say go to left at first, and all of sudden they start saying go to right. but yea, it's not easy.
P.S. I hope I could have more time to doodle around. I've bought some nice artbooks recently and getting inspired everyday.

Day of Days
Some doodles that I've done recently. First one is referenced from girl's fashion magazine, I was trying to get extreme expression of smile without getting ugly, obviously it failed. oh well, at least now I know what makes girl's face ugly. then second and third are from life drawing class. then I found cute chick in the class, so I draw her, forth one.
As someone probably know I'm working on my Katie and Ducky project. hope I can show you some progress here sometime soon.

Vote for Pedro! No! Kevin and Marcus!
http://www.attblueroom.com/hollywood/comic-book-challenge/mediaplayer.php?pid=87685
Okay, I'm still having hard time believing my eyes. My friend Marcus Thelie, who I believe one of the greatest talent, made a comic book with his friend Kevin Buckley. Now they are in a comic book contest. I spend some time with them in a dorm about 3 years ago. They both are really talented. "Really". Kevin uses ColErase like a magic wand. Marcus' monkey drawings are just like he got a zoo in his sketchbook (but the zoo only has monkeys :D Damn, Kevin was a huge guy. I still cannot believe that he lost his weight so drastically! Kevin, you remember that we talked bout Painter 5 at the basement? Man, how can I forget your song that you played for me, Marcus. I'm really happy for them. They both worked so hard. Vote for them!

Music week.
Doodle of the day.
So I've been taking full advantage of YouTube by using it as my time machine. I happened to looked up the band that I was listening in my high school days, named Cloudberry Jam. Their video and music flashed me back in time. I was there with my friends, family and my old CDs. The choice of my music was a bit British oriented, but probably some people get the same nostalgic feel if we live in same era. Here's some of the bands that I'm missing. Blur, Bluetones, Supergrass, Menswear, Silver Sun, Summercamp, yea sure Oasis, Ben Folds Five and good old Green Day.

By request.
So, I've been pretty busy for bunch of reasons. But actually my life is getting slower. I pretty much got used to my working place by now, having some good time with friends, nice food, movies and drink and stuff. Yeah having some fun. There's a tendency that we could forget the real reason why we are making some art when we are in a stressful situation. So I'm hoping this fun that I'm enjoying brings me some good inspiration for my next step.
One of my friends asked me why I didn't upload some of the characters in my sketchbook, so here it goes.

She's hot.
Here's another plug.
Hyunjung Rhee
So I was checking my friend's website and found that she finally finished her short film project that she was mentioning. That's basically story about me being pervert, because I was saying "oh, she's hot" whenever I found a cute girl. Alright Hyunjung, I know you're shooting to be nice to me but, what have you done!? WHAT HAVE YOU DONE!?
Sungjin Ahn
Another plug is Sungjin Ahn, who finally compiled his demoreel lately. His Pixar 3 class stuff, called Virgin Voyage, came out really good. Since this was his second time taking Pixar 3 and he's one of the keenest animation student I've ever met, his effort should be paid off.
It's always good to see a work from my friends. I guess it's time for me to show my stuff then.

Katie.
I'm slowly working on my project. I'm still not really sure how it goes.
So, I've just finished the animation that I was working on at the office. That was quick 3 weeks project, then while our Rigging dept. has not many things to do, I've got assigned to do another episodes of animation as well, which I definitely consider as a great opportunity for me.

Experiencing TV Production.
Sorry for not having any doodles lately, but I rather have my thought right now.
So I started animating at work. It's quite simple character for kids (nealy primitive if I could say), each episodes run about 1 min, my buddy made a model and rig, I'm taking care of animation but I also have to do rendering as well. So given time for me, which is 3 weeks by now, is not quite enough to get my satisfaction. I was used to spend 3 weeks to finish 300 frames for class. Guess how many time I got here for my first 350 frames. It was 2 days. That sounds more like insane actually, but that's exactly what is happening to me right now.
There's one thing that school never taught us, Efficiency. When I was taking Pixar class at the Academy, the whole environment was so ideal, just so ideal. We got 3 weeks for 300 frames, getting great critiques from teachers, spend some time critique each other and discuss about animation all day long with my friends. I guess not every production has such an ideal environment while they are having multiple projects going at the same time.
Plus, a quality that client expects us to achive is quite low I say. It may not be for all TV production but maybe because I'm working at Japanese production. Sadly but it's true that Japanese 3d animation is poorly executed over the years. I was surprised at the fact that some of supervisor laughing at the importance of Illusion of Life. man.... Japanese should honor the fact that we *do* have great talented animators in 2d production tho.
I would consider myself as lucky just because I still can have fun animating character for kids (well, I like cutie fluffy thingie more than dragons and warriors and stuff). In fact that's really great thing that I can make money by doing what I really want to do, u know.
If some of you found my experience interesting, cool that means I didn't waste my time writing some thoughts on my blog. I would write more of my experiences if my time allows.
I saw some of movies btw, Rushmore, Royal Tenenbaums, Nacho Libre. Man, Rushmore is such an incredible piece of work. I saw Royal Tenens first, and kinda hooked, not strongly tho. Then Rushmore, it's already been added to my list of the movies that I think I'm happy to see before I die.

Booya.
It's already 2007! so I spent some time to compile my doodles that I've done in last year. Then I realized that it's been a 4 years since I'd started drawing. I'm happy to see how much I've improved, but at the same time there's so much way to go ahead of me. I wish I could have been drawing since I was a kid. Anyways, you can reach my doodle archive from sidebar.

Animate.
Ok, I'm a bit high right now. But yeah, I will be an Animator for next upcoming project. Wooohoooo! It's not a big feature project, but I'm pretty much excited while this is my first real production experience as an Animator. Whatever shot I got, I will do my best for the shot. Then I will see something I've never been able to see once it's done.
btw, Did I say I'm excited?
Did I?

E.
Doodle of the day.
So I went to see the anime movie Tekkon Kinkurito. Animation was superb. Story was little vague for me since I haven't read the original comic. I am impressed none the less. I love small talk with my friend after the movie.
