Every New Day.

Doodle of the day.

What I wrote here is a lyrics of a song called Every New Day from my favorite band Five Iron Frenzy. Although I'm not a Christian personally, I think the song is such a beautiful song. I've never had a specific religion in my life, but I've met great friends and one great guy taught me oneday how to pray. By meeting such a friend and listening the music like FIF, it's actually affecting the way of my life. in a good way.

So, it's almost end of the year. I wish you all the great holiday and happy new year!

Cats will dance, anyhow.

This small dude is from personal project I'm working on. My friend wanted to do facial rig. She, Amy, is my working buddy sitting next to me in the office. Since her speciality is in facial rigging, I will ask her to do so, and I will rig up his body and animate. I got some story for him but not sure how much I can go with it. So I might end up with only animation test. But yea I think it's great chance to work with friend and exchange our knowledge.

The company I'm working on, they made a rig for the feature Valiant, so we do have great resource on feathers. I'm in the middle of researching it. Although I won't do crazy feather setup on him.

I also wrote some scripts and am rewriting my Arc script now. so there will be an update in a short amount of time. But don't expect me high, I'm working hard every day and doing some freelance job as well. Plus, I'm also being crazy about knowing about Matrix now. Matrix is good. and fun.

So yea it seems like I'm busy. I guess I am.

yeah... a post!

yope. It's been a while. is still someone up there? I finally got my PC and scanner working at home. I still don't get my internet connection tho.

I didn't get much of time to doodle around now, so only picture I got here is mainly from the Quick drawing workshop that I found and decided to join here in Tokyo. The class is okay, just a bit longer poses than I was used to draw.

In the company I have been studying so much mainly for Rigging and Pipeline stuff. have been studied Matrix technique to speed up my rig at home. Wrote some scripts. Trying to improve a rig by talking with Animator. It's been a lot of fun. We just got new person came from Pixar, he has been working at there for about 6 years I heard. So there will be much of exicitement for sure.

It's just matter of time. I'm getting more and more free time as I'm get used to work in the office. So I will start my own project and Animation practice in a short amount of time. hope I can post some of it here and getting some feedback.

Dirty lines.

Doodle of the day. I meant to polish more, but I'm running out of energy for this. I'm sick of this.

My line is too dirty. I'm not talking about how much I go for polish. My line just isn't telling story, gesture, forms and everything. I kinda like gorilla guy, but hate the girl. This is just doodle. I'm just moving my hands with pencil. I'm not thinking enuf to pick the line. Amazing that I realized by one word from my friend, "Simplify". I know I need more practice. And that's the only way we get better. Draw it man, DRAW!

oh, btw, I got a job in Tokyo, Japan. The company is called Polygon Pictures, Inc. They do CG shots for TV series/ads and Game movie stuff. I will be a Rigger. I'm still hoping if I could have some chance to animate actual shots tho. I still have most of my passion in Animation, so I will be spending my spare time for drawing and doing personal animation tests. But it's not bad idea at all to kick off my career as a Rigger, for my future path.

I will go to the school on next Tuesday once again, in order to say good bye to all of Pixar class friends and of course, teachers.

Nothing worth to share.

Rico the great guy.

Recently I realized how much my drawing lacks on sense of solidity. So those are just junks. Nothing worth to share, really. Ah I'm also interested in Hands now.

Lately I showed my old sketches to my friend. He was happend to find that fun to watch so, I will share it here as well. Go to my website by clicking this. Go to the page about me. then click on my stupid face. You'll get my old junks. Maybe some ppl might find it fun to watch. who knows.

My thoughts on Rigging.

As I proposed before, One Japanese company wanted to see my rigging skill. So I have been working on rigging last 2 weeks. It's been a while since I haven't done much of rigging these days, so I felt rusty. At the same time, I'd learned some of new techniques, so that was really exciting, too.

As my process goes, I just felt my rig sucks. I thought it's pretty cool at some point, but next morning I just feel so bad. It's like drawing or animation. And my presentation is not that good like my friend told me. It was a bit fast fowarded. I sent them a link already, so I hope the company can see what I'm capable of.

Some ppl might see my strong influence on Disney type of rig and GUI. That's true. Since I've been having strong interests on both Technical side and Artistic side of Animation, I have been always searching the way that advances this new medium, in both ways. Then I turned out really positive on the concept of Broken Rig and Bendbow.

It was just a puppet while back when I was in Japan 4 years ago. 3D animator had only ability to rotate some joints, and some IK. But what 2D animators have been doing is not just rotating the joints. They do whatever things to get the shape on the paper. So compared to 2D environment, 3D animator had a huge restriction.

New techniques like Broken Hierarchy or Bendbow has been introduced a while back. And I think this is really great advancement for 3D animation. Althought I haven't broke my rig that much yet, in a good Broken Rig, Animator can easily have the shape that he/she has in their mind. It's more like pencil than puppet. Animator can apply what they know easily, such as Line of Action, Squash and Stretch and Successive Breaking of Joints. I even think Bendbow brings some life into the model.

I think same thing would happen, In next 3 years, we probably see totally different rig. I'm sure that rig would have much less restrictions. As technologies progress, Animator can have more controls, in another word, Animator will have more responsibility to design things on the screen more than now. It's getting close to the pencil IMHO.

Anyways, here goes my reels. for those who haven't checked my latest Animation Reel, I will post it here as well. I noticed things I need to improve, both on Rigging and Animation. So I'm working on it, but always comments are welcome.

Rigging Reel. 46MB Quicktime Sorenson3
Animation Reel. 17MB Quicktime Sorenson3

Sorry for geeky post. I'm tired now. wanna do some Animations, and yeah, drawings!

Sweet Talkin' Woman.

I went to outside, get some lunch, then I heard the song. I knew the line and lyrics because I thought that's the song of my fav band, Five Iron Frenzy. But I got to know that was cover song of ELO. Shame on me. What a beautiful song! I can listen to this whole day!

I'm done with my rigging now. Compiling into a reel right now. I think I can sleep well tonight.

Going back to Japan.

Sorry I've been inactive on this blog lately. I have something to tell you, but if you don't wanna waste your time, don't read all of this below. It's all of my excuses.

I got some companies who really wants me as an Animator. But always my degree has been problem. well, actually my degree is not problem for companies but it is problem for U.S. government. Government needs me to have a Bachelor or higher degree in order to get H-1B visa (working visa). It was okay to get H-1B with Associates degree before 911.

I got a previous job at Gateway Japan, right after my graduation of highschool, because I was really crazy about computer and programming at that time. (well, I'm still crazy as you probably know :) So I've never been in a college in Japan. Then I came here but only degree I got at AAU was Associates degree, just because of my budget.

I talked with some lawyer personally, and companies also talked with their lawyer, if there's any way that I could get working permission here. But there seems no way around. I still have OPT, which is 1 year permission to work here legally, but companies don't want to hire the person who will quit in a year.

So now, I'm going back to Japan.

It hurts, actually. Probably it wouldn't hurt as much if company said my skill is not qualified. Personally I don't really care about degree. What I can do is the most important thing for me. But I also know this is how it is. So I'm planning to go back to Japan now, and work/save money, then will come back here in 3 years to finish my Bachelor. I'm 27 years old now. So I guess this will be my last chance.

I really appreciate my family and friends who understand my situation and decided to support me. All of my friends I met in this school is my treasure. Some of them are already kicking ass in the industry. So I don't feel bad at all. I'm sure I will come back. Luckily, one Japanese company is having interest on me as a Rigger. So I'm making my Rigging Reel right now. I'm sure I will post here pretty soon.

For those who is wondering bout existence of this blog, don't worry I won't quit this blog, and I will never stop being drawing junkie :D

Cheers, Boston!

1.1Boston was so cute! Every building is in some sort of style. People are nice and gentle. Girls are so cute! Unfortunately weather was really hot and humid. But I like the city none the less.

Being in Siggraph was really great experience for me. I was freaked out in the Job Fair a bit, but I dropped my reels to companies. I also faced the fact of working in U.S. I'm now thinking some things about my future. I will tell you here when time has come.

I got some of free T-shirt. Laika is my favorite one, they are so cool, so their T-shirt is. I bought some books and most importantly, I got signed on my copy of Thinking Animation2! Meeting 2 of great talent was great experience, after all I had been big fan of Spicy Cricket3 for a long time. I was just happy to be there.

I'm loving Animation right now more than ever. I don't know why. I felt stuck when I was taking Pixar 2 class last semester in Academy. But now I'm feeling like my head is flooding with Animation.

Siggraph 2006.

Here is my latest animation, still working on it.

I will be flying off to the Boston this weekend. I'm so excited, after all that'll be my first Siggraph. I'll be busy for running around Job Fair Booth. I hope I can get some good experience at there.

I'm also attending some meetings. I'm in for Angie Jones' BOF, so if you are an Animator, and attending that party, I'm looking for seeing you there. I'm not that much of party animal, so I might be a little shy, but I wanna meet a lot of ppl at there.

Have a nice weekend.

Art or Design

Doodle of the day.

A week ago, I read some articles about drawing. Any kid can draw a line on a sketchbook. The article was all about when a doodle becomes a drawing. So, that was the thing I had been thinking of.

Today, my friend asked me what is the difference between Art and Design. I guess what I was/am doing is design. Guess what I'm thinking now.

A.S.O.B.

Some doodles I did. I think my drawing lacks solidity all the time, so I have been drawing bunch of cubes and bubbles from different angles in my sketchbook. Well, that's not the only thing I did. I sent my reels to company. Obviously I got no call back so far, only thing I can do is improve my animation so that I can pass my new reel at Siggraph. Anyone going Siggraph this year so that we can meet up?

If we have met in person, you probably know I'm big fan of Ska/Punk music. I know that not much people would have interest even if I recommended some of musics. But I'm telling you again :P These guys are really good, you should have some time to listen thier music. Go and listen "1-800-ALARM-ME" or "People Pops And Fudgesicles For T" is good song, too. I was late to find them, but I haven't got such a big impact after Streetlight Manifesto.

If you like ska, another my favorite band also has online jukebox here. Listen Argentina ska :D

Ah, I realized this is not music blog, but drawing blog! I just feel happy whenever I hear my favorite music. Have a good day!

There's Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends production blog, didn't know it exists! I thought anyone reading this blog might find it invaluable. Bloo is my fav character after a Buttercup from PPG.

Sorry no update here. I'm in the world of LOST right now. I know I'm late but I just cannot get away from it.

dumb me.

Here is what I was working on past semester. It's probably my first portrait. Well, this me is somewhat cooler than actual me. Photo is much dumber. I'm not going for Hyper Realistic style. I like something rough, leave as it was. Nahh, whatever.

I probably shoot under the sun light to get more crispy result for later.

Drawing for fun.

Doodle of the day.
Well, actually these are not only doodles I did today. I eat lunch with my friends. Then I started to draw my friend's face. Here it goes.

Then they started to draw me. The picture below is my friend's work.

Whoa, how mean they are!!

I forgot who drew this. I really like this.

KaChow!

Bunch of dirty head studies. I'm finishing my demoreel, will be sending next Monday. I hope I can find a job. I'll post some of my animations soon.

I was lucky that I got ticket for advanced screening of Cars at Pixar Studio tonight. I doubt I don't have to say how great the movie was. That was my first visit of Pixar studio. I don't know others, but for me at least, was seriously exciting event. Since Cars is the first movie I watched in their studio, I won't forget this experience. I went to upstairs gallery, too. And that was just amazing. I have been dreaming to work at there for a long time, thinking how great it would be to work with talented people inspiring me every day. But they are not there only to get inspiration from others, they are inspiring others. I have very long way to go.

Suffer

Found this online. I laughed so loudly. Even tho you wouldn't find anything funny if you don't listen the music I do.

Sorry for no update for this blog. I had been so busy and only did some crappy sketches, thought it's not worth to update. I was thinking to suspend this blog since I don't have much of
thing to share these days. But a lot of my friends encourage me to keep it up, so I probably would do sometime soon. So don't check daily, but montly.

Bresson

One of my friends told me to update my blog since I don't have much of updates these days. I have been busy for my animation class, I mean really. anyway I attatch one from my recent head studies. Nothing interesting.

After I saw "A man escaped", I was really inspired by the way Bresson tells his story. Then I saw the movie called "Mouchette". Even tho my friends made fun of me, because I'm watching a lot of old movies, I thought this movie is one of the best I've ever seen. I wish I could understand French.

Don't worry, be happy.

Quick doodle of my sister and her husband, well, my brother, Teo. I think I will do painting for this someday.

I'm back here.

I drew this on airplane remembering the girl I met at the airport.

There was a girl carrying backpack of bear when I was waiting my flight in Tokyo airport. so I was sketching her when she is running around her daddy. then her mom noticed I'm sketching her daughter, mom came to my place and she saw my sketchbook. Since my sketch was terrible, I was afraid to expose my crap, but both parents liked my sketch of their daughter. So I gave my sketch to them. I was really happy. We talked a little then they left. They said they are going back to France. I was always thinking about how I can progress/improve my art skill and eventually get a job. But I almost forgot why I'm doing that.

Red nose? or not.

lemme drop off my recent character creation before I leave to Japan for spring break (actually my sister's wedding).

I have been really busy by now, and probably I will. My animation class got a lot intersting. I'm really having fun with my teachers. Right now I'm doing animation of Gear Change, an event causing emotional change. When I'm tuckling with my ideas, I came up with some of cool ideas at that moment, but I decided to to gunman fighting shot.

All the time, my idea comes when I'm doodling, so I doodle a lot. yea it's crappy doodles but some of picture got my attention. then I will get idea to go for animation. I dropped here some of my progress of character development. I was thiking about his age and personality at that moment. but never thought *why* he is fighting and *who* he is fighting against (that's what my teachers pointed me out!)

Even tho my teacher didn't point me out, a lot of my friend noticed my character always got reddish nose and they asked me why. Well actually I don't know. it's because that's the way I paint. If it doesn't fit to the character, I have to change it, but I like the visual quality of reddish nose somehow.

Since my animation sucks, I have to re-block whole thing, so I won't have spring break even tho I will be in Japan for a week.
